چکیده
Pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus are coexisting frequently. Diabetic patients have an increased tendency to acquire tuberculosis. The frequency of tuberculosis is 4-5 times more aggressive in poorly controlled diabetics and is significantly associated with the development of pleural effusion. Increased reactivation of tuberculosis has also been recorded in diabetics. One hundred and five patients of Diabetes Mellitus (Type-1=3, Type2=102) with Pulmonary Tuberculosis were enrolled as case group, two hundred and ten patients of only Pulmonary Tuberculosis were enrolled as control group. Assess the clinical, bacteriological radiological images of all enrolled patients were assessed. Sex distribution (male 64.76% vs. 59.05% , female 35.23% vs. 40.95% ). 55.28% of case group were positive for tuberculin skin test and 60.52% of control group were positive for tuberculin skin test. 69.67% patients of case group showed atypical pattern with lower and lower middle lung field involvement. Level of HbA1c 8.99 ±1.07 & AFB 1.51 ± 0.69 in case & level of HbA1c 5.43 ± 0.76 & AFB 1.15 ± 0.50 in control.. Hyperglycemia is significantly correlated with load of micro bacilli (Correlation Coefficient(r)= 0.3321 vs. 0.1294 & p=.0478 vs. p=0.5375 ). Hyperglycemia is strongly associated with severity of fever and haemoptysis. Hyperglycemia is significantly correlated with the load of acid fast microbacilli. So theDiabetic patients are more prone for the severity of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Diabetic patients showed worst condition of lungs and increase the frequency of complications.

Effect of Poor Glycemic Control in Newly Diagnosed Patients with Smear-Positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus
Background: There is growing evidence that diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important risk factor for tuberculosis (TB). A significant number of DM patients have poor glycemic control. This study was carried out to find the impact of poor glycemic control on newly diagnosed smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: In a hospita...

Background and purpose: Computed tomography (CT) scan is of great help in confirming the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) before the sputum test result. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pulmonary involvement patterns in CT scans of TB patients with positive sputum smears. Materials and methods: This retrospective descriptive-analytical study was conducted usi...
متن کاملTime to Sputum Smear Conversion in Smear-Positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients and Factors for Delayed Conversion
Pulmonary tuberculosis is a common infection worldwide. In the eastern part of Iran, fluctuations in tuberculosis prevalence are seen due to the migration of people from Afghanistan. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time of bacteriologic sputum conversion after treatment and affecting factors in those whose smear does not become negative. This study was carried out on 85 smear-positive ...
متن کاملLocal Ischemia and Increased Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Following Ocular Dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
The pathogenesis of intraocular tuberculosis remains poorly understood partly due to the lack of adequate animal models that accurately simulate human disease. Using a recently developed model of ocular tuberculosis following aerosol infection of guinea pigs with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, we studied the microbiological, histological, and clinical features of intraocular tuberculosis infection...
متن کاملIncidental unilateral tuberculous sacroiliitis detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT in a patient with abdominal tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is a systemic disease which involves skeletal and articular system very rarely. Osteoarticular tuberculosis commonly occurs in the vertebral column and more rarely in the sacroiliac joints. In this study, we report a 44-years-old male patient with low-grade fever, malabsorption syndrome, abdominal and pelvic ascites and low-back pain, that underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for identifying t...
